Winter Wonderland

Attic window blocks using a panel are all the rage in the quilting world now.  So I had to try it.  I found this small panel and thought it would be fun. The wall hanging measures 29 1/2" x 24".  I divided the panel into 12 'windows' of 5" x 5 1/2".  The window 'frames' are 3/4" wide.  The outside black border is 1 1/2" wide.

The magic of the attic window block is in the use of the fabrics to outline the scene, make the block.  Using 3 colors, with a lighter to darker value makes it look 3 dimensional.   I also love how your eye fills in the gaps and you don't notice the spacing where the window frame is.

I cheated a bit as I don't like doing Y seams, so I made 1/2 square triangle blocks for the intersection.

I quilted straight lines in the window frames and a gentle S curve in the dark gray sashing.  I did a big meander in the black border.
